1. Tell us what you did in this trip
The trip was great. First, you have to commit to waking up at the break of dawn on a Saturday and make your way to Thanon Chan. As soon as everyone arrives we head south. We stopped once at 7/11 for a much needed breakfast and caffeine fix. Then we head to Petchburi to a small pier, Ta Klong Kone, if I’m not mistaken. The staff promptly informs us about the agenda for the day and how to navigate our way while on the boat.
We were set off for sea. Luckily the ocean was so still and peaceful, everyone relaxed and enjoyed the ride seeing small fishing cabins in the middle of the ocean and birds perching. I even got a bit of shut eye before any climatic encounter. Then I was awoken to do a quiz about whales and conservation.
May be two hour or so into the trip on the north route we spotted our first whale. His name is Petch, a showy little bugger. He came so close to the boat after he got use to us. I’d say even as close as three feet. Every time Petch came up someone would yell out his coordinates so we would turn to look and take pictures. I realize though that I’d rather look and not take so many pictures. It’s just not the same through the lens. It was interesting. Some of us climb atop the boat to get a better view.
While we headed south, the staffed informed us more on their current project. All the do’s and don’ts that still needs to be encouraged and enforce respectively. We then set out to eat lunch and made our way south in hopes of seeing more whales. We ended up seeing the same one. Not only was Petch a bit of a showy bugger he was clingy as well. We headed back to shore reaching around 3 half 3. Headed to another boat but this time it was not for any whale watching but for delicious seafood.
2. What was your highlight of the trip?
Seeing the whales real up close of course! And eating seafood!
3. What was interesting for you?
All the educational facts about whales and regulations on how to respectfully and carefully enjoy their presence. I love how Thailand has already done so much to preserve and study them but still there are certain things that could be improved for safer eco-tourism.
4. What do you think of the trip?
I really thought that it would be more dramatic than see a whale feeding. But it was quite a humbling experience.
5. Would you recommend people coming to our whale-watching trip again?
Yes! And I have already done so! Many are interested but the need to find the time
